UNION CITY, NJ– The Saint Peter's softball team (1-3, 0-1 MAAC) fell 5-4 in its home opener against conference foe Quinnipiac (5-5, 1-0 MAAC) in a tightly contested battle.
Morgan Lipansky recorded her 100th career strikeout during the game, while freshman
Paige Seemon paced the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, launching her first collegiate home run and the Peacocks' first homer of the season.
Lipansky (1-1) was credited with the loss after pitching 3.0 innings, allowing five runs on two hits and four walks while striking out five.
Brielle Coppola provided strong relief, giving up just four hits across 4.0 innings. Saint Peter's finished with eight hits compared to Quinnipiac's six but struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position, leaving seven on base to the Bobcats' five.
WHAT HAPPENED
After
Morgan Lipansky recorded her first strikeout of the game in the opening inning, Quinnipiac struck first on a two-run home run to left field from Kennedy Demott.
Lipansky responded by retiring the Bobcats in order in the second, striking out two. Saint Peter's capitalized in the bottom half, putting together a two-out rally to take the lead.
Angela Tremarco started the surge with a base hit down the third-base line that brought home
Angelina Wagner.
Paige Seemon followed on the next pitch, blasting a home run to deep left field to give the Peacocks a 3-2 advantage.
The Bobcats answered in the top of the third, plating three runs to regain the lead. Quinnipiac capitalized on two walks, a single, a sacrifice fly, and a Saint Peter's fielding error to move ahead 5-3.
Saint Peter's cut the deficit to one in the fifth.
Kiana Kadena Matsuda singled up the middle and stole second before Wagner chopped a ball down the third-base line, allowing Kadena Matsuda to score and make it 5-4.
The Peacocks looked for a late push but went down in order in the seventh as Quinnipiac secured game one.

Saint Peter's concludes the series Sunday, March 8, with a doubleheader at Washington Park on the Jersey City/Union City border. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with the series finale set for 2 p.m.
