WEST POINT, NY– The Saint Peter's softball team (7-35) battled but fell 6-4 and 5-2 to Army (27-22) in a midweek doubleheader at the Army Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon.
Brielle Coppola (1-11) was credited with the loss in the opener, tossing a complete game while allowing six earned runs on eight hits.
Gabriella Rivera provided 2.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit, as the Peacocks stranded eight Black Knights on base.
The offense totaled five hits in game one, with
Lauren Czerwinski pacing Saint Peter's with a 2-for-3 effort and two RBIs out of the leadoff spot.
In the nightcap,
Morgan Lipansky (3-9) took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on six hits. The Peacocks again recorded five hits, striking out six times and leaving six runners on base.
i led the offense in game two with a 2-for-3 performance, driving in both runs and recording the lone multi-hit effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Army got on the board early with a pair of one-out singles and stolen bases to take a 1-0 lead in the first, then added another run in the second on a two-out double and single.
After being held hitless through two innings, the Peacocks responded in the third.
Kiana Kadena Matsuda and
Angelina Wagner reached with a leadoff single and walk, and
Lauren Czerwinski followed with a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2.
Army answered in the bottom half with a solo home run to regain a 3-2 lead.
Saint Peter's moved back in front in the fourth
. Carlee Charles led off with a single, and
Olivia Christopher doubled to left-center to drive in pinch runner
Aine Curley. Hannah Klotz followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners, and Kadena Matsuda brought in another run on a double-play ball to give the Peacocks a 4-3 advantage.
Army responded again in the bottom of the inning, using two walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a pair of singles to retake the lead, 5-4.
The Black Knights added an insurance run in the fifth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Saint Peter's threatened in the seventh, moving a runner into scoring position with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game.
GAME TWO
The nightcap remained scoreless through the first 3.5 innings, with both teams combining for just three hits.
Army broke through in the fourth with a three-run home run, then added another run later in the inning following walks and stolen bases to take a 4-0 lead.
The Black Knights extended the advantage to 5-0 in the fifth on a triple and sacrifice fly.
Saint Peter's cut into the deficit in the sixth.
Paige Seemon and
Carlee Charles reached on a leadoff single and walk, and sacrifice hits from
Olivia Christopher and
Hannah Klotz brought both runners home to make it 5-2.
The Peacocks were retired in order in the seventh, as Army completed the sweep.
UP NEXT
The Peacocks remain in New York, traveling to New Rochelle for a three-game MAAC series against Iona, April 24–25 at Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval. Friday's doubleheader begins at 12 p.m., followed by game two at 2 p.m., with the series concluding Saturday at noon.
