EASTON, Pa. - The Saint Peter's baseball team fell short in a road game to Lafayette, 4-14, on Wednesday evening at Kamine Stadium.
The Peacocks (4-38, 0-21 MAAC) started off with a rough patch in the first inning after the Leopards (10-32, 5-16 Patriot League) scored 10 runs in the bottom half. Lafayette ultimately came out on top after its bats came to life.
The Peacocks' hitting had a decent night, accumulating six total hits and four RBIs throughout the game.
Alex Angelidis started on the mound with
Harrison Lombardi following up, recording four strikeouts.
Steve Polizzi stood out among the Peacocks hitters, hitting his eighth home run of the season. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get the Peacocks on a scoring streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lafayette wasted no time taking control, erupting for 10 runs in the first inning to build an early lead. Brandon Doubek got the scoring started with a three-run home run to left center, bringing in Matt Colella and Will Dobil. Jack Mislan followed with a solo shot to right center and Luke Caucci added an RBI double down the left field line to extend the lead.
The Leopards continued to pour it on as Dobil delivered a two-RBI single to right field, advancing on an error and eventually clearing the bases as three runs scored on the play. Colella added an RBI single and Doubek capped off the inning with an RBI double to make it 10-0.
Lafayette added to its lead in the third inning when Doubek lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Ryan Stoddard to score and push the advantage to 11-0.
Saint Peter's showed signs of life in the fourth inning, putting together a three-run frame. Polizzi launched a solo home run to left field to get the Peacocks on the board.
Luke Schwartz followed with an RBI single, and
Max Doninger added another run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 3-11.
However, Lafayette quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Caucci delivered an RBI single to left center, scoring Mislan and extending the lead to 12-3.
The Peacocks managed to add another run in the seventh inning when
Ian Huang singled to center field to bring home Doninger. Lafayette answered once again in the bottom of the inning, as Mislan and Caucci each recorded RBI singles to extend the Leopards' lead even further.
Despite Saint Peter's late efforts, Lafayette's explosive start proved too much to overcome, as the Leopards maintained control the rest of the way.
