JERSEY CITY, N.J.- The Saint Peter's women's soccer team (1-6-1) CONF. (0-1-1) had a nail-biter of a game this afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
Freshman forward
Elise Viggiano and sophomore forward
Bianca Bellino each netted goals, but they were not enough to put Saint Peter's ahead of The Mount.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Bergljot Kristinsdottir recorded a penalty save in the game. Her second penalty save of the season.
Mount St. Mary's (1-5-2) conf. (1-1-1) knew it had to make a statement with this game. They had not won a game this season heading into today's contest.
WHAT HAPPENED:
FIRST HALF:
The Peacocks were quiet in the first half of the game. The Mount dominated the opening 20 minutes of play with their attack. Mount had a shot in the opening two minutes of play. That was followed by two corner kicks in the opening eight minutes.
The Mount got on the scoreboard first after Fineen Cregan found Peyton Gallagher inside the Saint Peter's 18-yard box. The Mountaineers scored again just three minutes later.
The Mountaineers had a comfortable lead early on, but a lot of game action was still to be played.
The Peacocks made a pair of substitutes in the 17th minute, after the Mountaineers second goal. Freshman forward substitute
Elise Viggiano immediately made a difference in the game and scored just three minutes after coming on. The Peacocks now had momentum going forward.
At half time, The Peacocks trailed 4-10 on shots. Sophomore goalkeeper
Bergljot Kristinsdottir had 4 saves.
SECOND HALF:
The second half started much calmer compared to the first. Viggiano and sophomore midfielder Mira Iztin each tested The Mount keeper with a pair of shots.
Kristinsdottir also made a pair of saves in the 64th and 66th minutes.
Sophomore forward
Mayla McLean had an opportunity to strike in the 72nd minute. McLean's shot went to the Mountaineers' keeper's hand.
Senior forward
Sydney Ragland had a great look in the 73rd minute. Ragland found herself on a breakaway with no Mountaineer defenders nearby. She struck the ball past the goalkeeper, but the strike wasn't strong enough. Sophomore forward
Bianca Bellino was there to tap the ball into the back of the goal.
With the score now level at two apiece, both teams were looking to come away with three points and their first Metro wins.
A foul inside the Peacocks' 18-yard box awarded The Mount a penalty kick. Kristinsdottir stepped up and made the save for Saint Peter's to keep them in the game.
Just two minutes later, with 10 minutes to play, The Mount fired back with a goal from Erin Antone.
