Serge Clement begins his fifth season on John Dunne's men's basketball coaching staff in 2017-18.
During the 2016-17 season, Clement helped guide the Peacocks to a historical run by claiming the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) title, the programs first ever national postseason tournament championship. Saint Peter's became the second MAAC team ever to win a national postseason tournament and the first team from New Jersey to win a national postseason tournament title since Princeton in the 1975 NIT. The Peacocks closed out the season winning 11 out of their last 12 games and finished the season with a 23-13 overall record, which was tied for the second most wins in a single season by a Peacock team, and a 14-6 MAAC record, the most conference wins ever in a single season by a Peacock team. The team also finsished the MAAC regular season in second place, the highest finish by a Peacock team since the 1988-89 season.
Over the course of Clement's four seasons in Jersey City, the Peacocks have posted four wins in the MAAC Tournament and have made two trips into the MAAC semifinals in 2015 and 2017. With Clement on staff, Saint Peter's has wins against Rutgers and Seton Hall after a thrilling 83-80 overtime win against Seton Hall in 2013-14 and a 68-50 win against Rutgers in 2014-15. Over the course of his four years, Clement has coached four Peacocks that scored 1,000 points in their career, seven All-MAAC selections, and the program's first ever MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and Lefty Driesell Defensive All-American Team member.
Clement came to Jersey City after serving as an assistant coach at Adelphi for two seasons. The Panthers posted a 35-24 overall record and 27-17 in Northeast-10 action in those two campaigns. Adelphi went 21-9 overall and 16-6 in league play in Clement's first season that ended with the Panthers advancing to the NCAA Division II East Regional Semifinals. Clement coached one player that received all-conference second-team recognition in 2011-12. He managed all official visits of student athletes, maintained robust recruiting database and also directed and oversight of admission and financial aid process for current and incoming players. Clement coordinated team travel, including lodging, transportation and athlete per diem. In addition, he managed paperwork for the officials for home games, purchased team equipment and served as the Adelphi Basketball Summer Camp Director.
Clement got his start in the coaching ranks at SUNY Cortland from 2009-11. The Red Dragons went 16-11 overall and 11-7 in the SUNYAC while advancing to the conference semifinals in his first season. He helped develop the all-time leading scorer and the sixth-best scorer in program history at Cortland State, two players that helped the Red Dragons advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in their senior year. He coached two players that reached 1,000 points in their career at SUNY Cortland and a pair of guards that earned all-conference second-team recognition. Along with his coaching obligations, Clement was also SUNY Cortland's assistant camp director where he was the immediate contact for all coaches and full time staff. Clement was responsible for day-to-day operation of each camp and oversaw all activities, in the dining hall, and residence halls and was on call for the duration of all camps. Clement worked closely with the head coaches on the day-to-day basis in making sure all requests from coaches are met in a timely manner and was responsible for data entry and mailings at the direction of the Camp Director.
Clement has extensive summer camp experience after working with All Hoop Group Events, St. John's University, Potsdam State, Cortland State, Five-Star Basketball, Hoop Mountain, Weekend Clinics, Reebok All-American, Duke University, Siena College and Nike Pre-Draft Camp since 2009.
A 2009 graduate of Potsdam State with a degree in business economics, Clement played his final two seasons with the Bears. He appeared in 22 games, including 12 starts as a junior and averaged 7.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. In his senior year, Clement appeared in 22 games with four starts while averaging 6.0 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He ranked in the Top-4 in 3-point percentage in the league during both seasons at Potsdam State and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Academic Honor Roll in 2009.
Clement earned his Master of Science degree at SUNY Cortland in sports management.
