Saint Peter's Athletics Volunteers at Grow-a-Row

Athletes from four teams spent their Sunday morning picking fresh produce for food desert areas

PITTSTOWN, NJ - On Sunday, September 23, members of the Saint Peter's University Athletics Department volunteered at Grow-a-Row, picking fresh crops to be delivered to areas where people lack access to healthy, fresh, affordable produce.

The department had volunteers from multiple athletic teams, including Women's Soccer, Baseball, Men's & Women's Swimming and Men's & Women's Track & Field, as well as several administrators. The volunteers spent the day picking cucumbers & zucchini as well as clearing some of the lots. In total, Saint Peter's volunteers picked approximately 3,000 pounds of food/crop in an hour.

America's Grow-a-Row's mission is to positively impact as many lives as possible through a volunteer effort of planting, picking, rescuing, and delivering free fresh produce. Grow-a-row GROWS, GLEANS & GIVES℠ away free fresh produce by organizing groups to plant and harvest from their own farms and their partner farms.

Throughout the season (mid-July through October), Grow-a-Row delivers produce every other week to food desert areas (areas where people lack access to healthy, fresh, affordable produce) in Newark, Jersey City, East Orange, Camden, Morristown, and eastern Pennsylvania to set up a Free Farm Market℠.  By partnering with organizations in each of these areas, Grow-a-Row can connect with residents in need of produce and thus help address issues of diabetes, obesity, and other health concerns that are often associated with food desert areas and financial hardship.
