Rookies Shine to Highlight Stellar Track & Field Showing at MAAC Indoor Championships

NEW YORK – The Saint Peter's University men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the two-day 2020 MAAC Indoor Championships at The Armory on Sunday (Feb. 23).

While a number of Peacocks put together exceptional performances in the premiere meet of the indoor season, two rookies, in particular, stood out, as freshmen Vernetta Gosier and Jabari Higgs-Salaam both took home special recognition and were named the 2020 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Rookies of the Meet in both circuits, respectively. The men would finish in fifth place in an eight-team field, while the women placed sixth out of nine programs.

Honorees:
  • Gosier earned a medal by winning the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.79 seconds which is second-best in the event in the MAAC this year. Gosier also medaled in the 200 meters with a time of 25.28 seconds, a personal best and tied for fourth-best in the MAAC.
  • Higgs-Salaam was among the top-five in the long jump and triple jump and set personal bests in both events. He medaled in the long jump by jumping for 7.05 meters (sixth-best in the MAAC) and 13.85 meters in the triple jump (fifth-best in the MAAC). His mark in the long jump qualified him for the IC4A Championships in Boston next month.
Top Performances: Men
  • The Peacocks once again shined in the 4x400 meter relay event. In a close battle, the quartet of freshmen Jarrett Gentles, Isaiah Sanchez, Jayaire King and Clardo Nestor was the runner-up, finishing in 3:16.76. Their time was the second-fastest time in the MAAC this year just behind Monmouth.
  • Gentles and Sanchez placed in the top-10 in the 400-meter event. Gentles finished with a personal best time of 49.21 seconds, qualifying for the IC4A Championships. Sanchez finished in 50 seconds flat.
  • Nestor had a strong showing in the 800-meter dash by finishing in the top-10 with a time of 1:56.35.
  • Jayaire King and freshman Kyle Estivene and were among the top finishers in the 60-hurdles event. Estivene finished in 8.66 seconds while King came in at 8.72.
  • Freshman Anton Svirskyi came in the top-five in the pole vault event. He cleared 3.75 meters.
  • Freshman Matthew Defilippis set a personal-best for himself in the shot put event by throwing for 13.17 meters, which is among the top-15 distances thrown in the MAAC this year.
Top Performances: Women
  • Senior Ohunene Albert earned a top-five placement in the 60-meter finals with a time of 7.85 seconds. She also finished with a time of 7.81 seconds in the preliminaries, which is the fourth-fastest time in the MAAC.
  • Ohunene Albert also came in the top-five in the 200 meters by clocking in at 25.49 seconds. Fellow senior teammate Avosuahi Albert wasn't far behind in the event as she also had one of the top times at 26.50 seconds. The duo finish the season with the third and fourth-fastest times in the event in the MAAC.
  • Avosuahi Albert also medaled in the 400-meter dash by finishing in the top-three at 57.81 seconds. She finishes the season with the fastest-time in the event this year for the indoor season.
  • The quartet of Ohunene and Avosuahi Albert, Gosier and freshman Kaylah Davis, had one of the top times in the 4x400 meter relays at 4:01.78, which is fourth-best in the conference.
  • Freshmen Alexis Peterson and Lorretta Owoh both came in the top-15 in the long jump event. Peterson jumped for 4.96 meters while Owoh was right behind her at 4.95. Owoh was also a top-10 finisher in the triple jump with a distance of 10.76 meters.

The indoor season continues for student-athletes who qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships, which will be held in Boston on March 6.
