Nestor First-Place Finish Caps Strong Performance at NYC Gotham Cup

NEW YORK - The Saint Peter's University track & field teams returned to competition on Friday in the NYC Gotham Cup. The meet was held at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, where they will return once more this season in the beginning of February.

 

Top Performances: Men

  • Clardo Nestor captured the lone victory of the day for the Peacocks, taking first place in the 500 meter with a time of 1:04.47. This now stands as his collegiate-best time in the event. Jarrett Gentles (15th place, 1:08.38) and Essowedeou Botobikpi (25th place, 1:11.19) joined Nestor in the race.

  • The Peacocks also saw success in the 4x400 relay, as the team of Delano Gooden, Michael Conover, Devon Bembridge, and Clardo Nestor combined to take third place in the event with a time of 3:21.02.

  • Michael Conover saw individual success as well, claiming fifth place in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:32.95. This now stands as his collegiate-best time in the event. Devon Bembridge finished shortly thereafter in 11th place with a time of 2:36.80. This new time shatters his old collegiate-best in the event by nine seconds.

  • Delano Gooden had a solid day for the Peacocks as well, grabbing a top-10 finish in the 200 meter with a time of 22.41. He also participated in the 60 meter, taking 14th place with a time of 7.08.

  • Michael Ilesanmi again participated in both jumps for the Peacocks, finishing in eighth place in the triple (12.81m) and 12th in the long (6.56m).

  • Dylan Powell was just shy of a top-10 finish in the weight throw, placing 11th with a distance of 15.03m.

 

Top Performances: Women

  • For the first time in her collegiate career, Diamond McLaughlin participated in the 500 meter and claimed a top-10 finish. The freshman finished in ninth place with a time of 1:20.87. She was joined by teammates Tola Osipitan and Kaylah Davis, who tied for 17th place with a time of 1:25.04

  • The team of Jasmine Pope, Diamond McLaughlin, Tola Osipitan, and Kaylah Davis participated in the 4x400, capturing seventh place with a time of 4:09.78.

  • Janai Orders placed 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 10.26m. This was only .02m away from breaking her collegiate-best distance of 10.28m. Orders was joined by teammate Iria Paz in the event, who finished in 20th place with a distance of 9.61m.

 

Up Next

The Peacocks return to action on Saturday, January 29th when they participate in the NYRR Millrose Games. The meet will take place at The Armory in New York, NY.
