JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team lost to Manhattan by a score of 66-56 Tuesday night in Run Baby Run Arena. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the team in scoring, as she got 13 points in only 14 minutes of action.
It was another slow start for the Peacocks, as Manhattan took a 6-0 lead followed by a timeout by Marc Mitchell. Saint Peter's finally got on the board with 7:03 on the clock thanks to a jumper by senior guard Nickelle O'Neil. She scored seven in the quarter. Williams scored the other seven, but the Peacocks trailed by eight, 22-14, at the end of the quarter.
Saint Peter's couldn't put the ball in the basket in the second quarter, as they only scored three points. Senior guard Kourtney Crane made a bucket within the first minute, and didn't score again until 1:05 left to go in the half when sophomore Victoria Ikenasio made a free throw. Manhattan led 34-17 at the half.
The Peacocks got back into the game on the back of their defense in the quarter. The team forced five steals in the third. Junior center Kassondra Brown opened the quarter with five straight points, including a made three. Senior guard Binta Salawu provided a spark off of the bench, as she scored five, making two free throws and a three-pointer. The Jaspers led by ten at the end of the third.
Salawu again provided the offense to start the fourth quarter, as she scored five straight points for Saint Peter's to trim the deficit to five. After that, Manhattan was able to hold off the Peacocks as the quarter went on, answering each time the Peacocks made a bucket. The Jaspers were able to win by ten and extend their winning streak against Saint Peter's to 17 straight games.
