NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's men's and women's track and field teams begin the two-day 2021-22 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday at The Armory in New York, NY.

Due to COVID-19 regulations postponing the event a year ago, the Peacocks will return to the indoor portion of the championships for the first time since the 2019-2020 season.

Return of the (Indoor) MAACs

  • In the aforementioned 2019-2020 season, the men's team finished in fifth place during the Indoor Championships, while the women's team finished in sixth.

  • Then-freshman Vernetta Gosier earned a medal by winning the women's 60 Meter with a time of 7.79, which was second-best in the event in the MAAC that year. Gosier also medaled in the 200 Meter with a time of 25.28, a personal best and tied for fourth-best in the MAAC that year. Due to that effort, she was named the 2020 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Meet.

  • The quartet of Jarrett Gentles, Isaiah Sanchez, Jayaire King and Clardo Nestor were the runners-up in the 4x400, finishing with a time of 3:16.76. Gentles and Sanchez placed in the top-10 of the 400 Meter. Gentles finished with a personal best time of 49.21, qualifying for the IC4A Championships. Sanchez finished in 50 seconds flat. Nestor had a strong showing in the 800 Meter by finishing in the top-10 with a time of 1:56.35.

Recapping the Indoor Season

  • The Peacocks are no stranger to The Armory, where they have competed three times already this season. The indoor portion of the schedule opened at The Armory, where the Peacocks claimed a quartet of first-place finishes in the TCNJ Winter Open. The teams also returned to The Armory for the MLK Relays on January 14th, while the 4x400 women's team returned a third time to place third in the event at the NYRR Millrose Games on January 29th.

  • The Peacocks have also made another home on Staten Island, where they competed for three consecutive weekends spanning from January 21st to February 4th. The three events included the NYC Gotham Cup, Great Dane Invitational, and the Metropolitan Indoor Championships.

  • The only two stops on the schedule not at The Armory or Ocean Breeze were a trip up to West Point for the West Point Open on January 8th and a trip down to West Long Branch for the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational on February 12th.

Who To Watch

  • Clardo Nestor - The redshirt junior has been on a tear during the indoor season, claiming Saint Peter's records and first-place finishes along the way. Nestor set the Saint Peter's record in the 600 Meter with a time of 1:22.54 at the TCNJ Winter Open. He then went on to grab a first-place finish in the 500 Meter with a time of 1:04.48 at the West Point Open. With his sights set on breaking the 800 Meter school record next, Nestor will continue to be a force for the Peacocks.

  • Diamond McLaughlin - The freshman has made an instant impact on the Peacocks program. Similar to Nestor, she has also broken a record this year. Also at the TCNJ Winter Open, McLaughlin set a new school record in the 600 Meter, finishing with a time of 1:41.49. She followed up that performance with a ninth place finish in the 500 Meter at the NYC Gotham Cup with a time of 1:20.87.

  • Val Augustin - After transferring in at the start of the semester, Augustin has made an immediate impact at Saint Peter's. He joins an already strong squad in the hurdles and long jump categories, joining teammates such as Kyle Estivene and Michael Ilesanmi. Augustin's first meet as a Peacock proved successful, as he captured first place in the 60 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.44 at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships. This performance led him to MAAC Track Performer of the Week honors on February 9th.

  • Abigail Vital - Vital took every advantage of the team's trip to West Point and made her presence felt. She secured a first-place finish in the 60m Hurdles with a time of 9.02. The sophomore also appeared in the 200 Meter, taking an eighth place finish with a time of 26.39. After competing in this event only once during the regular season last year with a time of 27.13, Vital has taken almost a full second off of her time. This performance led her to MAAC Track Performer of the Week honors on January 11th.

  • Vernetta Gosier and Michael Conover have also taken first-place finishes so far this year. Gosier saw success in the 60 Meters at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational, where she grabbed first place with a time of 8.08. Conover's first place finish came by way of the TCNJ Winter Open, this time in the 1000 with a time of 2:34.21. This now stands as his collegiate best time in this event.

  • The relay teams have also been successful for the Peacocks this season, claiming multiple top-three finishes in multiple events.
