JERSEY CITY. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (4-5, 2-0 MAAC) picked up its second nonconference win of the season over UMBC (5-6) 66-60 at Run Baby Run Arena Tuesday night.
Latrell Reid scored a career-high 20 points and defensively had a career-high eight steals. Corey Washington added 12 points off the bench for the Peacocks. The Peacocks' bench outscored the Retrievers' bench 31-19.
UMBC shot 13-29 FG in the first half. The opening 20 minutes was tightly contested as there were four lead changes between both teams. UMBC scored 8 of the last 13 points in the first half and led 31-26 at halftime. In the second half, the Peacocks increased defensive pressure and utilized a full-court press on UMBC. The Peacocks forced 21 turnovers in the game and scored 20 points off turnovers.
Down 43-38 in the second half, the Peacocks went on a 11-0 run which featured a layup, and a pair of free throws from Washington. At the 7:43 mark, Reid hit a mid-range jump shot which extended SPU's lead to 51-47. Down the stretch, UMBC closed the gap to 53-51 with 5:37 left in the game.
Up two in the final five minutes, the Peacocks exploded on an 8-0 run. The run was capped off when SPU's Armoni Ziegler stole the ball and slammed a fast break dunk with 3:51 left in the game. The Peacocks led 62-52 and closed out the game with free throws for a 66-60 final.
The Peacocks will have 10 days off before their next game. Saint Peter's hosts Kean at Run Baby Run Arena on Dec. 22.
