JERSEY CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's University volleyball team (6-17, 1-11 MAAC) fell to Rider (10-13, 8-4 MAAC) in straight sets (16-25, 13-25, 22-25) at Run Baby Run Arena on Tuesday night. The Peacocks started to get things going in the third set, but it wasn't enough as the Broncs notched the victory.
After a tough start to the first and second sets, the Peacocks had to fight their way back into the match. They started doing so in the third set, building a favorable lead over the Broncs. In the closing stages, Saint Peter's struggled to slow down Rider's attack, which served to be the difference maker tonight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE: Rider jumped out to a 10-5 lead to start the set and force a Saint Peter's timeout. Following the break, the Broncs held onto the five-point advantage while leading 13-8. The Peacocks let up three straight unanswered points, but a kill by
Elena Bilhartz ended the run. Rider caught fire at the service line, totaling four aces in the set. The Broncs took the first set, 25-16.
SET TWO: The Broncs and Peacocks battled it out at the beginning of set two, as Rider went ahead, 8-4. Four consecutive Saint Peter's attack errors put the Broncs up 13-4 before a kill by
Sibana Gonzalez Acevedo put an end to the streak. Head coach
Fernando Colon called Saint Peter's second and final timeout of the set as the Peacocks trailed, 7-18.
SET THREE: Unlike the other two sets, the Peacocks started off hot this time, taking a 4-0 lead over the Broncs, which forced a timeout. Out of the timeout, a kill by
Addison Baglio and two Rider errors put Saint Peter's up 7-1. Rider started to make a comeback as the set continued, but the Peacocks managed to hold onto their lead at 14-7. Facing a large deficit, the Broncs began to claw back and come within three at 17-20. Rider scored six unanswered points to end and win the set, 25-22.
