JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in a tough matchup against the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday 38-66 at Run Baby Run Arena. This loss now moves the all time record against Monmouth to 15 wins and 33 losses.
De'Naya Rippey was once again sensational for the Peacocks. Posting 15 points and a team high six rebounds. HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: Rippey began the contest with a triple from downtown to earn the first points for the Peacocks.
Louella Allana and
Layla Laws both made impacts early on the defensive end, with back to back possessions ending in steals. With the media timeout on the horizon, the score after five minutes was in favor of the Hawks 8-3. Coming out of the horizon, Allana got the scoring started with a tough layup inside.
Carys Roy added to the Peacocks total with a hook shot inside. As the end of the first approached,
Jada Mills intercepted a pass and delivered a perfect pass to Rippey to draw a foul and cash in at the line.
Jayshlynn Vega scored the final points of the quarter at the free throw line, ending the first with a score of 9-13 in favor of Monmouth.
SECOND QUARTER: Laws scored the first basket for the Peacocks in the second with a great drive inside. Unfortunately, this came at the expense of a massive scoring drought as Monmouth grew a big lead over Saint Peter's. Rippey knocked down a tough layup inside as the score sat at 13-31 with three minutes to go. The tide began to shift after two huge plays, the first being a big chase down block by
Sierra Patricio, and the other came as an and-1 from Roy. In spite of the slow start to the quarter, the Peacocks battled hard to end the first half with a score of 16-34.
THIRD QUARTER: Rippey got the scoring going for Saint Peter's with a basket inside as the shot clock expired. Mills and
Nikola Zdenkova added to the Peacock total with a pair of clean mid range jumpers. Halfway through two, the Peacocks shortened the deficit to a score of 22-41 going into the media timeout. Once play resumed from the timeout, Vega knocked down a huge 3-pointer and the Peacock defense forced a turnover on the other end. Rippey once again was dominant down low, forcing her way into the paint and scored on an easy layup. After another crafty score inside by Rippey, the Peacocks fought hard to end the third with a score of 29-44.
FOURTH QUARTER: Mills began the fourth quarter with a huge corner 3-pointer. Vega joined in the 3-point party with a triple of her own. Heading into the media timeout, the Peacocks found themselves down 35-53 after the Hawks began to light up the floor from downtown. Coming out of the timeout, Rippey scored the first points for the Peacocks, going 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Unfortunately, the Peacocks struggled to find the basket, as the Hawks went on a 13 point run as the Hawks ended the contest on top with a final score of 38-66.
