Roy Nets Season High As Saint Peter’s Defeated In Hard Fought Battle Against Mount St. Mary’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in a heartbreaking loss to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 10 by a final score of 51-55 at Run Baby Run Arena.

The Peacocks in defeat were still sensational, with Carys Roy having her best game of the season thus far. Scoring 15 points and leading the team in rebounds and assists, both with five. Layla Laws with a breakout performance for Saint Peters, scoring 13 points. And Jayshlynn Vega came up big with 12 points and knocked down four 3-point shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: Eszter Turi
earned the first point for the Peacocks on a trip to the free throw line. Roy also made a trip to the line and earned a point as well. Vega capitalized on multiple offensive rebounds with a pair of 3-pointers to make the score 8-9 halfway through the first and into the media timeout. Laws scored the first basket for the Peacocks coming out of the break on a floater inside. Laws again took advantage of a mismatch inside, converting on an and-1 and sinking the free throw in the process to give the Peacocks a 13-11 lead. After a basket inside by the Mountaineers, the score remained tied at 13-13 to end the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER: Turi started the second quarter with the first basket on a drive inside the lane and laying it up for the easy 2-points. Roy continued the scoring for the Peacocks off a fancy dish inside from De'Naya Rippey to make the score 19-15 in favor of Saint Peter's heading into the media timeout. Roy once again took advantage of the defense from the Mount with another basket inside coming out of the timeout. Rippey added to the total with a free throw to make the score 22-18 with three minutes left. Louella Allana ended a scoring drought by both squads with a long 3-pointer before Laws went coast-to-coast grabbing a defensive board and scoring at the other end. With a ton of momentum still riding, the Peacocks went into the half maintaining a comfortable 29-22 lead.

THIRD QUARTER: Laws scored the first basket for Saint Peter's on a turn around finish inside. Roy added another basket to her total with a tough finish inside. Vega added another triple to her total with one from very deep range to give the Peacocks a 36-32 lead halfway through. Vega continued her impressive shooting day with another 3-pointer after the timeout. Despite tough defense being played by the Mount, the Peacocks ultimately lead 41-37 to enter the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER: Just like the third, Laws scored the first basket for the Peacocks inside off an assist from Reilly Sunday. Roy came out of the timeout knocking down a crucial mid-range jumper to keep the lead in favor of Saint Peter's 47-44. Nikola Zdenkova kept the scoring coming for the Peacocks with a corner triple that erupted the crowd and Peacock bench. However, the Mount kept fighting back and tied the game up 50-50 with two minutes to go. Rippey kept the game intact with a free throw at the line late. However, thanks to a late foul on the Peacocks, the Mountaineers managed to knock down five free throws to propel them forward to a 51-55 victory.

UP NEXT: The Peacocks return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Siena with a 2pm ET tipoff.
