Roy Shines As Second Half Propels Peacocks To Victory

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team earns a great win following an impressive second half on the road against Iona on Monday, Jan. 19 by a score of 63-57 at Hynes Athletic Center in New Rochelle, New York. 

The Peacocks victory came off the back of an incredible second half of scoring 37 points, with 20 points alone coming in third quarter, including a 15-4 run in the final five minutes of the third. Carys Roy continues an electric January stretch of play with a team best 16 points, and going a perfect six for six from the free throw line. Reilly Sunday also had a huge performance of 14 points including three 3-pointers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER:
The Peacocks started the first quarter on fire with 3-point jumpers from Nikola Zdenkova and Sunday with Louella Allana adding a mid range jumper for good measure. Heading into the media timeout, Saint Peter's had built up a 6-5 lead, and then coming out of the timeout, the Peacocks scored nine straight points, all on shots from outside by Zdenkova, Layla Laws, and Sunday. Following a free throw late by Laws, the Peacocks left the first quarter in the lead with a 18-10 score at the buzzer. 

SECOND QUARTER: Roy and Laws began the second quarter attacking the inside and scoring the first buckets for the Peacocks. Following a step back triple from Sunday, Saint Peter's led Iona 25-12 heading into the media timeout. The Gaels ripped off a 12 point run that put the game within one before De'Naya Rippey scored one at the free throw line. Heading into the half, the Gaels had snatched the lead from the Peacocks with a score of 26-29. The Peacocks however had solid production from the bench as they scored eight points in the second quarter compared to Iona's four points from the reserves. 

THIRD QUARTER: Zdenkova started out the second half with a long mid range jumper before Allana answered with a triple from way beyond the arc. Heading into the media timeout, the Peacocks found themselves down 31-38 following a seven point run by the Gaels. Roy came out of the timeout with two big time hook shots inside to make the score 38-35 with only three minutes to go. Roy continued to dominate the third quarter scoring her third straight basket on another turn around hook shot. A basket inside from Rippey and a pair of free throws from Roy gave the Peacocks the lead with a 41-40 score with a minute left. Another bucket from Rippey inside and then a Jayshlynn Vega triple from outside ended the third quarter with a 46-42 lead for the Peacocks and a 9-2 run in the final three minutes. 

FOURTH QUARTER: Roy started the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws and Sunday followed up with a pair of her own. Following two free throws from Iona, the Peacocks scored six straight points from both Sunday and Roy. Heading into the media timeout, the Peacocks held onto a comfortable 56-48 lead. A jumper from Zdenkova led to a four point run by the Gaels to make the score close, until the Peacocks knocked down five free throws by Rippey, Sunday, and Allana to ice the game. Handing the Peacocks the victory on the road with a score of 63-57.
