NEW YORK, NY– The Saint Peter's track and field programs competed on day two of the MAAC Championships at the Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory live on ESPN+ Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks had a day at The Armory, capturing three gold medals, breaking two MAAC Championships records, setting two indoor school records, and rewriting the program's 800m record.
Saint Peter's was one of three programs to break a MAAC Championship record and the only one to do it twice.
Quinnipiac claimed the women's team title with 173.5 points, followed by Sacred Heart (98.5) and Mount St. Mary's (84), while Saint Peter's finished ninth with five points. Sacred Heart secured the men's title with 114 points, followed by Mount St. Mary's (108) and Iona (101). The Peacocks placed fifth overall with 49 points.
FINALS RESULTS
Mercedes Cruz-Fletcher, in her MAAC Championships debut in the 60m hurdles finals, clocked in at 9.41 for eighth. Sacred Heart's Ariyanna Jackson claimed gold in 8.75, followed closely by Mount St. Mary's Marta Gonzalez Alvarez (8.79) and Quinnipiac's Sydney Lavelle (8.85).
Ameen Zubair and
Niles Thony represented the Peacocks in the 60m, finishing two-thousandths of a second off one another, with Zubair claiming fifth in 7.032 and Thony (7.034) sixth. Marist's Amari Mathis won the event in 6.74, with The Mount's Joshua Dean placing second (6.91), and Sacred Heart's Colin Brown (6.93) third.
Cashieve Blair earned the first gold medal of the day in the 400m finals in record fashion, breaking not just a 10-year indoor program record but also an 11-year-old MAAC Championships record with a time of 47.02, finishing nearly a full second ahead of the competition.
Favour Owolabi competed in his first MAAC finals, crossing the finish line in 48.86.
Brian Yeager made a statement in his MAACs debut, racing to a first-place finish in a new personal best 1:50.64. The freshman finished over a second faster than the field, rewriting Saint Peter's history, becoming the first Peacock to run a sub 1:51, shattering a 12-year-old indoor record (1:52.40) and the 14-year-old outdoor record (1:52.00).
The men's 4x400 relay team closed the meet in a dominant fashion, breaking one of the longest-standing MAAC Championships records in conference history dating back to 1989. The quartet finished over two seconds ahead of the competition, clocking a gold-medal time of 3:14.54.
Owolabi opened the race and set the tone with a 49.22 split before handing off to Blair, who delivered the fastest split of the race at 47.02.
Ajani Peck-Wekunda maintained the lead with a 49.75 leg, and Yeager sealed the historic victory with a 48.56 anchor to rewrite the conference record books.
FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
Lourdes Lawson and
Ciara Brown secured top-ten placements in the shot put, with Lawson landing a mark of 11.74m for ninth, while Brown threw 11.30m, finishing right behind the rookie. Rider freshman Kendra Green was victorious in the event, landing the only mark past 13 meters (13.72m). Sacred Heart's Suzan Adekunle (12.57m) prevented a Broncs sweep, taking silver, followed by Maria Chiariello (12.36m).
