HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: Zdenkova got the game started with five straight points on a triple from the corner and then a running floater in the mid range. Roy and
Reilly Sunday followed that up with a Roy free throw and a Sunday layup before another floater came from Zdenkova. But thanks to some stellar shooting by Marist, the score remained 10-9 heading into the media timeout. The Peacocks came out of the media timeout fast and furious, going on a seven point run. Those points came from a pair of free throws by
De'Naya Rippey, a banked in triple by
Laila Grant, and a mid range jumper by a returning
Jayshlynn Vega. With one last basket at the end by Marist, Saint Peter's left the first quarter out in front with a 17-14 score.
SECOND QUARTER: A defensive heavy start to the second quarter saw both squads be held scoreless for the first few minutes before
Layla Laws ended the drought with a layup inside. In response, the Red Foxes ripped off a seven point run that led into the media timeout for a 19-21 lead. Roy soon found her groove and scored the next two baskets for Saint Peter's, with Rippey adding a layup herself for good measure. However, the Red Foxes kept the lead thanks to a long 3-point jumper and then playing tough defense on the Peacocks. Ultimately maintaining a 25-30 as the first half buzzer sounded.
THIRD QUARTER: Sunday started the third quarter with a triple from downtown.
Louella Allana followed up with a pull up jumper and another triple came from the hands of
Jada Mills in the corner. After a layup by Laws, the Peacocks were down 35-37 heading into the media timeout. With a free throw by Marist coming out of the timeout, the Peacocks ripped off five straight points from Allana and Vega. With around two minutes left in the third, Laws drove inside and laid up another basket, but after a triple by the Red Foxes, the third quarter ended with Marist up in a 42-43 battle.
FOURTH QUARTER: The first two minutes saw no scoring by either side until Laws scored the first basket inside the paint. After a layup by Marist, the Peacocks scored back to back baskets inside by Mills and Zdenkova. At the media timeout, the score sat in the hands of the Peacocks with a 48-45 score. The Red Foxes scored four consecutive points with Saint Peter's responded by a pair of free throws by Vega. After a Zdenkova triple, Saint Peter's led with a 53-51 score.
