JERSEY CITY, NJ– The Saint Peter's softball team (7-43, 3-24 MAAC) fell to Fairfield (26-22, 18-7 MAAC) by a combined score of 18-0 in a Friday doubleheader at Jaroschak Field.
Morgan Lipansky (3-12) made the start in the opener, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and striking out four.
The Peacocks totaled just three hits in game one, with
Angela Tremarco, Summer Solitaria, and Steph Bendzlowicz each recording one. Saint Peter's struggled offensively, striking out seven times.
In the nightcap,
Brielle Coppola (1-14) got the start, going 2.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and five walks.
Gabriella Rivera came in for relief and finished the game, allowing just two hits with no runs scored.
At the plate, Saint Peter's collected just one hit in game two, with
Bella Nutting knocking her first collegiate double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Fairfield threatened in the opening frame, loading the bases, but
Morgan Lipansky worked out of the jam with a swinging strikeout.
The Stags got on the board in the second, using a one-out single and back-to-back doubles to take a 2-0 lead. They extended the advantage in the third with a lead off homer, two singles, and a Peacock error to make it 5-0.
Saint Peter's was retired in order through the first three innings, with five strikeouts mixed in.
Angela Tremarco recorded the team's first hit in the fourth with a single to left.
Fairfield added three more runs in the fifth. A single, stolen base, and walk put runners in scoring position before an infield single, sacrifice fly, and double extended the lead to 8-0.
The Peacocks threatened in the final inning, using a lead off walk from
Olivia Christopher and two-out infield singles from Bendzlowicz and Solitaria to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning.
GAME TWO
Fairfield opened the scoring early, using a pair of two-out singles and a stolen base to take a 1-0 lead.
The Stags broke the game open in the second with another two-out rally. A walk and stolen base set up the inning before a Peacock throwing error brought in two runs. A single, walk, and double pushed the lead to 5-0.
Fairfield added four more runs in the third, using four singles, a wild pitch, two stolen bases, and two walks to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Peacocks were held to just one hit, coming from pinch hitter
Bella Nutting, who sliced a double to left field in the final inning.
