JERSEY CITY, N.J.- Peacocks (3-2-2, METRO 1-0-0) got back in the win column with a 2-1 conference victory over Niagara (1-4-1, METRO 0-1-0) at Jaroshak Field on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Peter's recorded 16 shots, with nine of them on goal, as
Jesus Pila and
Leo Coval found the back of the net to push SPU to the finish line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF-
The first minutes of the match were physical, with
Darrell Etienne getting booked for a yellow in the third minute, followed by Niagara getting three fouls.
The Purple Eagles would strike first in the 16th minute following a foul from
Tiernan Garvey.
In the 19th minute,
Harry Edwards would come on for
Samuel Rudjord; later in the half,
Marcos De Elias would try to create momentum for the Peacocks with two shots going to the bottom that would be saved by Niagara.
Connall McErlain would send it from outside the box, and it would go top right, leading to a corner kick.
In the 35th minute, Pila would find the back of the net following a
Davis Barnes assist; soon after, the Purple Eagles would make some adjustments with substitutions.
The Peacocks would continue to put the pressure on Niagara as
Toby Smith would send one top left, and on the 38th minute Coval would help SPU pull ahead with a goal of his own.
Being up one, Saint Peter's continued to apply the pressure with another shot by
Enrique Mendes. Niagara would also get a shot off to end the half.
SECOND HALF-
At the start of the second half, Niagara continued to look for an equalizer but were unable to get past Saint Peter's defense, with multiple shots getting saved by
Sebastian Heredia-Randen.
The Peacocks would start to play more conservatively between the 48th and 69th minute, with Rudjord and Coval getting shots off.
Around the 70th minute, Saint Peter's turned up the heat as Coval would get another shot that would go out right and Garvey adding a shot to his line that would go bottom right.
Niagara would get a couple of attempts but were unable to get the equalizer, with the Peacocks sending the Purple Eagles home.
