Cardona, Alvarado Recognized as Saint Peter’s September Student-Athletes of the Month

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Saint Peter's University Athletics has announced freshman volleyball player Alanis Alvarado and senior golfer Jose Cardona as the September Student-Athletes of the Month.

Freshman sensation Alanis Alvarado claimed two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards in the opening week of the season. Alvarado picked up both the MAAC Player of the Week honor and MAAC Rookie of the Week award.

An outside hitter, Alvarado had a stellar collegiate debut for the Peacocks, leading the team to two wins in the opening frame, the first wins for the team since 2015. Alvarado, a 5-11 Bayamon, Puerto Rico native, led the Peacocks with 69 kills and 3.63 kills per set, 25 more kills than the next Peacock and over 1.3 mores kills per set than the next closest teammate. She also ranked second on the team in digs (74) and digs per set (3.89). Out of five matches in the first week, Alvarado recorded double figure kills in four matches, registered double digit digs in three matches, posted two double-doubles, and recorded a 20-20 match. She became the first Peacock to post a 20-20 match since 2015.

Alvarado's stellar offense led the Peacocks to a victory over NJIT (3-2) in the Bucknell Invitational, placing her on the All-Tournament team. She then guided the team to a road win over Lafayette (3-1) to conclude the week.

Alvarado became the league's first freshman to earn both player and rookie weekly awards in the same week. She claimed Saint Peter's first conference volleyball weekly award since Lauren Behren was named Player of the Week back on September 16, 2014.

This summer, senior golfer Jose Cardona flexed his skills in the business world, interning with KPMG LLP as an audit intern in the Financial Service area. As an Audit intern, Cardona spent most of the days in the clients' headquarters having the opportunity to go to and work with clients such as BMW Financial Services, Valley National Bank, Columbia Bank, and Northfield Bank.

In addition, Cardona was able to attend several trainings throughout the internship, including the firm's main training program in Orlando, Florida, where he met interns from different KPMG offices all around the country. Cardona was able to work closely with partners in the firm and KPMG professionals. Cardona wrapped up the internship with a job offer that will be available for him upon his graduation from Saint Peter's in May 2019.

Cardona was selected to the MAAC All-Academic team in Spring 2017 and 2018.
