JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team was selected seventh in the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) coaches' preseason poll, as announced by the league today. The Peacocks received a total of 50 votes.
The seventh-place selection represents the highest predicted finish in the conference for the men since 2011, when Saint Peter's was selected fifth in the preseason. In 2018, the Peacocks reached the first round of the MAAC Championship, ultimately falling to No. 3 seed Marist College by a 1-0 margin. It was the first season since 2010 that the Peacocks qualified for the championship. The men finished last season with an overall record of 8-9-2 and a conference mark of 5-4-1.
"We will be striving for team success over the course of the season with the individual accolades that come with it," said head coach Julian Richens.
Junior midfielder, Jordan Jowers was selected as a member of the 2019 Preseason All-MAAC Team. Jowers becomes the first Peacock to be selected to the preseason team since Luke Fairlamb '17 in 2015. The England native started in 18 games for the Peacocks in 2018, recording seven goals and one assist over the course of the season, leading to a spot on the 2018 All-MAAC First Team. His seven goals ranked third in the MAAC, while his 15 points ranked seventh. Jowers led the league in shots attempted and was second amongst his conference peers in shots per game, game-winning goals, and shots on goal.
"It's a good personal reflection on Jordan's performances over the previous two years," said Richens. "Jordan is going to be one of our captains as a junior this season and we are looking forward to seeing him continuing to be an impact player on our team."
The Peacocks will kick-off the 2019 season on Friday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's University.
