EDISON, NJ - The 2019-20 Saint Peter's men's basketball team made conference history today, with freshman guard
Doug Edert becoming the fifth different newcomer this season to earn Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pepsi Zero Rookie of the Week honors, announced by the league office today. The weekly award is the eighth overall for Saint Peter's on the year, which leads all MAAC schools in 2019-20. The award is also the fourth for the team in as many weeks and the fifth overall in the past six weeks.
Edert scored a career-high 28 points to lead first-place Saint Peter's to its fifth straight win on Sunday, following a 73-54 victory over hOURglass Rival Rider. Edert poured in 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half of the game, connecting on 7-of-10 three-pointers and going 9-for-12 from the field. The 28 points, nine field goals, and seven triples were the most by a Peacock in a single game this season and his seven made three-pointers were the most in a game by a Peacock since 2013. On the 2-0 week, Edert averaged 15.5 points, 1.0 assists and rebounds, and 0.5 steals and blocks per game, in less than 19 total minutes of action.
Edert becomes the fifth member of the Saint Peter's rookie class to claim MAAC Pepsi Zero Rookie of the Week honors, joining
Daryl Banks III,
Fousseyni Drame,
Hassan Drame, and
Aaron Estrada. The five individual rookie weekly award winners make Saint Peter's the first MAAC team in recent history to achieve this feat, surpassing the 2015-16 Fairfield University team which had four individuals claim the award. In total, the quintet has combined to win eight rookie weekly accolades, breaking the program record of seven rookie weekly honors, which was set in 1996-97. Moreover, the eight total weekly awards are one shy of the Saint Peter's program record of nine total, which was set in 2003-04 by Keydren Clark (four players of the week) and Shane Nichols (five rookie of the weeks).
Edert and the first-place Peacocks take the annual Western New York trip this week, visiting Niagara (Feb. 27) and Canisius (Feb. 29) for the final road contests of the season.
