Senior Spotlight: Alyssa Conanan

Saint Peter's Athletics has been fortunate to have so many incredible senior student-athletes who have contributed to the positive momentum not only of their specific program, but the entire athletic department and the University as a whole. To celebrate who they are not only on their respective playing surface, but in the classroom, in the community and more, we are excited to present our 2019-20 Saint Peter's Athletics Senior Spotlight series!

When did you start playing soccer and how did you wind up sticking with it for as long as you have?
I started playing soccer when I was 4. Growing up, soccer was always just a game for me that brought me a lot of joy. I never felt like I was forced to play, and I think that is why I have always loved the game so much.

Describe your journey that led you to Saint Peter's; how did you find out about the school and the program and what made it stand out/ultimately led you here?
For me, Saint Peter's was an opportunity to go to school close to home, earn a valuable degree, and play Division I soccer.

Who is your favorite athlete (professional) and why?
It is hard to pick just one. To name a few, Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, and Carli Lloyd. I love all sports and those are just a few of the greats from their respective sport that I admire for their work ethic and success.

If you weren't playing soccer, what other sports would you be competing in?
I grew up playing soccer, basketball, and softball. It was a really hard decision choosing just one to focus on when I got to high school. It came down to basketball or soccer - so if I didn't choose soccer, I would've played basketball.

As a senior (and captain) on this year's team, how did you lead the group? What was your style?
I would say I lead the group in an affirmative, productive way. You'd have to ask my teammates that one. Overall, I think throughout my years I earned the respect of the team. That made leading the team my senior year a bit easier; my teammates respected what I said and trusted me. For my leadership style, I'd say I chose to lead by example.

Who is the funniest person on the team and why?
The funniest person on the team is Steph [Radakovic]. She brings energy with her to every team event, whether it is game day or a 7am practice. She is constantly singing and dancing, making jokes, just always the one making the team laugh.

What are you majoring in and what has been your favorite class?
I major in biology with a minor in psychology. My favorite biology class was anatomy and physiology. My favorite psychology class was cross-cultural psychology.

How do you want to be remembered at Saint Peter's in terms of your impact on the program and how it's grown over the course of your tenure?
In terms of my impact on the program, I want to be remembered as someone who was part of this rebuild. Not just me, but both my class of 2020 and the class of 2019. My freshman year, we did not win a game. Throughout my years, we became more and more competitive and the entire mindset of the program shifted in the right direction. As this program continues to grow, I hope the 2019 and 2020 class are remembered as pivotal reasons this program is turning around.

What is your favorite athletics memory during your time at Saint Peter's?
My favorite athletics memory is my first collegiate win. I remember there was still 30 seconds left, and I was celebrating. Probably not my best decision, but we still won. One of my teammates started celebrating with me, and Vic was in goal screaming at us.

How are your post-graduation plans shaping up? Any jobs/grad school/etc. lined up?
Post graduation, I plan to earn my Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University. The program starts in May.

If you could say one thing to your returning teammates next year as one last message of advice/wisdom, what would it be?
With the current situation right now of the program not having a coach, I would advise the team to control what they can control. No matter who is at the helm of the program come August, it is still important to prepare yourself to perform optimally. The four years go fast, so enjoy every minute. Soccer is a game; it is supposed to be enjoyable, it should not make you unhappy. Find the reason you play everyday and let it motivate you to be better.
