Higgs-Salaam Concludes Epic Sophomore Season at NCAA East Regionals

JERSEY CITY, N.J.- Sophomore jumper and sprinter Jabari Higgs-Salaam concluded his sensational sophomore season by proving he belonged among the nation's elite performers after a fine showing at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Eastern Regional Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.

Higgs-Salaam, who became the first student-athlete in seven years to qualify for the regional championships, concluded his 2021 outdoor campaign with a 41st-place showing in the long jump. The sophomore started his flight with a distance of 6.63 meters (21'-9") before posting his best mark of the afternoon of 6.97 meters (22'-10.5"). He would default on his final try to settle for a slot just outside of the top-40 in a field of nearly 50 competitors.

The Lawnside, New Jersey, native wrapped up the spring with a sterling resume for the outdoor circuit. After winning the long jump with a season-best 7.46 meters at the 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Championships earlier this month, Higgs-Salaam officially punched his ticket to the NCAA Regionals with the 46th-best distance in the region. He became the first Peacock to qualify for the regional championship since former All-American and Saint Peter's Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Isaiah Harris '14 last did so in 2014.

Higgs-Salaam also won the long jump at the Davis Relays (6.91 meters), Peacock Invitational #1 (7.20m) and the Metropolitan Championships (6.88m) to cement his status as one of the region's elite long jumpers. He was the runner-up in the event at the ECAC/IC4A Championships and also finished third in the triple jump at the Davis Relays with a distance of 13.72 meters (seventh-best in the MAAC in 2021).
