Apostolico, Varela Earn Wins In Golf Duel with Iona

WEST ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Jimmy Apostolico and sophomore Adam Varela earned head-to-head wins in Saint Peter's men's golf's duel match against Iona on Monday.

The Gaels took the overall title, winning the six golfer per team match play event 3.5 to 2.5 at the Rock Spring Golf Club.

Apostolico earned a point for the Peacocks by winning his match against Iona graduate student Gonzalo Arcelay, 2 and 1. Varela had the other point for the Peacocks with an identical 2 and 1 win over Iona junior William Fleck. 

Sophomore Antonio Conde Ortega picked up half a point after finishing his match all squared with Gaels sophomore Brandon Burkhamer. Senior Melvin Morales went toe-to-toe with Iona grad student Justin Burkhamer, ultimately dropping their match, 5 and 4, against the Gael who's won four of the last five MAAC Men's Golfer of the Week honors. Senior Caleb Rossi went one hole further before falling, 4 and 3, while freshman Pablo Alvarez went the distance before dropping his match, 2 and 1. 

The Peacocks are back in action tomorrow with another duel match against Wagner. It tees off at 2 p.m. at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J.
