Top Moments: Men’s Soccer Rallies from Behind for a 2-1 Double Overtime Win Against Bucknell

Saint Peter's University Athletics had some incredible moments on the playing surface this past academic year and put together a series of incredible moments that instilled great pride.

To honor the phenomenal student-athletes and all they accomplished in 2021-22, in the month of July, the athletics department will look back at some of the most memorable moments every Tuesday and Thursday.

Setting the Stage

In the third match of the season, and the first at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field, the Saint Peter's men's soccer team was looking for its first victory of 2021 against Bucknell University. The contest, played on Saturday, Sept. 4, featured a pair of teams who both came into the contest with 0-2 records.

In an Early Hole

  • The Bison were the stronger team to start the game, but it was sophomore midfielder Matt Ellis for Saint Peter's who had the best chance of the first 15 minutes, ringing the left woodwork from just outside the box on the left side of goal.
  • The teams traded chances for the next 20 minutes before Bucknell put the opening goal of the game on the board in the 36th minute, which also gave the Bison a 1-0 lead going into the half.
  • On a quick counter attack, Jordan Miller collected a pass from Brennan Gac and found the back of the net to put the Peacocks in an early one-goal deficit.

Climpson Sparks the Comeback

  • It was the Peacocks who came out after halftime on the attack, when in the 55th minute, junior defender Tom Climpson was taken down by a high kick inside the Bucknell box to award Saint Peter's a penalty.
  • Senior midfielder Jamie Davis stepped up and converted the penalty into the bottom left of the net for the Peacocks to tie the game at 1-1.

Gridlocked at 1-1

  • For the next 20 minutes, it was all Peacocks as they out-shot the Bison 5-0 during that stretch but were unable to get over the hump and find a game-winner.
  • With just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest, SPU goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho was challenged in the box but made a brilliant save to keep the contest knotted at 1-1.
  • Graduate forward Marco Torino had the best look for either team in the first overtime, as his turnaround shot from outside the box was saved.
  • The score remained tied at 1-1 after the first overtime session.

Hoyt Finds the Game Winner in Final Minute of Double OT

  • The Peacocks created a remarkable series with the time running down at the end of double overtime to get the winning goal.
  • Jamie Davis made a remarkable run down the sidelines and played a ball to junior defender Brian Carvalhoso, who then crossed the ball into Matt Hoyt
  • Hoyt wasted little time as he snuck his shot under the crossbar to give the Peacocks their first win of the season.

Game Notes

  • Hoyt's goal was his first of the season and his third of his career. It was also his first career winning goal.
  • Davis picked up three more points in this game, now putting him with seven for the campaign to lead Saint Peter's. He's scored or assisted on all of the Peacock goals this season.
  • This was the first overtime win for the Peacocks since March 29, 2020, where they beat Quinnipiac 3-2 after one overtime period.
