JERSEY CITY, NJ- The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team is set to take on the challenge of MAAC conference play in the 2024-25 season.
The Saint Peter's women's basketball team is gearing up to compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), which is celebrating its 44th year of competition during the 2024-25 academic year. The conference is home to 13 esteemed institutions committed to academic integrity and athletic excellence, including Canisius University, Fairfield University, Iona University, Manhattan University, Marist College, Merrimack College, Mount St. Mary's University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Sacred Heart University, and Siena College.
As the Peacocks prepare to face this strong lineup of opponents, they aim to make their mark in one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball. Each game will test their resilience and teamwork, showcasing the high-level talent and determination that defines the MAAC.
Saint Peter's is set to open their MAAC Conference play on Thursday, December 19th at Manhattan. The Peacocks (2-7) aim to carry the energy from their solid defense and home court dominance as they enter conference play.
The team is anchored by senior forward Fatmata Janneh, who has delivered a standout season thus far, averaging 18.9 points per game while coming close to a double-double with 9.8 rebounds per contest. Janneh's consistent play, highlighted by a shooting percentage of 45.4% and 75.9% from the free throw line, will be key as the Peacocks face competitive MAAC opponents. She was recently named the MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season after her third double-double performance of the season in a win over LIU last week.
Supporting Janneh is sophomore guard Layla Laws, who averages 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Laila Grant complements the offense with her sharpshooting from beyond the arc, hitting 12 three-pointers this season at 26.7% efficiency.
Despite challenges on the road, the Peacocks have demonstrated resilience, including a dominant defensive performance in their most recent win against LIU, holding the Sharks to 37 points. Defensively, Saint Peter's averages 6.1 steals per game, with balanced contributions across the roster.
The Peacocks will look to improve on their 2-0 home record as they host their first conference game on December 21st against Iona. The 2024-25 campaign culminates with the 2025 Hercules Tires MAAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships from March 11-15 at Atlantic City's Historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for the sixth consecutive year dating back to 2020.
