Bashir Mason Selected As Finalist For Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award

JERSEY CITY, NJ. - Saint Peter's Men's Basketball Head Coach Bashir Mason was selected as a finalist for the 2023-24 Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award.

The award is presented annually to the top minority head coach in Division I college basketball. The Ben Jobe Award is named after Coach Ben Jobe, an icon in Historically Black Colleges and Universities basketball history. He is best known as the head coach of the Southern University Jaguars, a position he held for 12 seasons. He was also head coach at Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Talladega College, Tuskegee University, and South Carolina State.

In his second year at the helm, Mason led the Peacocks to their second NCAA Tournament berth in the last three years. Before the season, Mason and the coaching staff overturned the roster and brought in eight new players. The Peacocks boast the 12th-best scoring defense in the nation at 63.4 points per game. Saint Peter's won the MAAC Tournament Championship for the fifth time in program history, defeating Fairfield 68-63 in Atlantic City on March 16. Corey Washington made the All-MAAC First Team, and Latrell Reid earned All-MAAC Third Team honors and was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year.

This selection is Mason's fifth time as a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award (2023-24, 2020-21, 2017-18, 2015-16, 2012-13).

The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches and two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com. The 2024 award will be announced in Phoenix, AZ, site of the Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
