Saint Peter’s Prepares For Dueling Home Conference Matchups

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team returns home following a huge win over Iona on Monday, Jan. 19 with a 63-57 final score against the Gaels. Now the Peacocks prepare for two big home contests, firstly on Thursday, Jan. 22 against Merrimack, and then Saturday, Jan. 24 against Rider on Alumni Day.

For the Peacocks in the win over Iona, the second half play by Saint Peter's was sensational, with a massive 20 points being scored in the 3rd quarter alone. The biggest story coming off the victory was just the incredible performance by Carys Roy who has had an incredible month thus far. Scoring 16 points with two blocks, both the most in the victory, and in the month of January has four double digit scoring games, the most of any player on Saint Peter's in the month. De'Naya Rippey has continued to ascend the ladder in her sophomore year to become a legitimate star, leading the Peacocks in scoring and ranking second in the entire MAAC in rebounding with an 8.8 average.

Looking towards the opponents now, the Peacocks aim to avenge a heartbreaking loss to Merrimack earlier in the month on the road with a 59-67 final score. In the loss, the Peacocks managed to have a few bright spots, particularly coming from the starting lineup. In the contest, Saint Peter's had four out of the five starters score double digit points, with Louella Allana and Nikola Zdenkova leading the charge with 11 points. Rippey with a double double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Eszter Turi with 10 points herself. However, the Warriors dominated the second half, outscoring the Peacocks 38 to 23 to grab the victory.

For Rider, the Broncs come off a rollercoaster weekend, pulling off a massive upset over Sacred Heart 64-54 before dropping a tough game to Manhattan 46-58. Kristina Ekofo has been the top scorer for the Broncs, with an average of 10.7 points per game and shooting an electric 90.6 percent from the free throw line. Last season was an even split between Saint Peter's and Rider, with the Peacocks winning the final matchup in a nailbitter 55-54. All time between the two Jersey schools sits as 50 wins and 30 losses for Saint Peter's against Rider. Tipoff for the games is scheduled for 7 pm ET against Merrimack and 2 pm ET against Rider, all MAAC contests will be streamed live on ESPN+
