RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in the final road contest of the season to Manhattan 49-68 in the home of the Jaspers.
In the game the Peacocks were led by a career performance by
De'Naya Rippey, who posted another career high of 30 points and leading the team in rebounds with eight. Rippey also contributed heavily at the free throw line, knocking down eight in just eleven attempts. In fact, every point scored in the second quarter for Saint Peter's was done by Rippey.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: Nikola Zdenkova knocked down the first basket for Saint Peter's off a pick and roll screen into a deep triple.
Louella Allana followed the basket up with a turn around jumper from the mid range. Halfway through the first, the score sat at 5-9 in favor of the Jaspers before a spinning layup inside by
Layla Laws made it a one score game. Entering the media timeout was a 7-10 ballgame in favor of Manhattan. Coming out of the timeout the Peacocks made an immediate impact on the defensive end thanks to a steal by
Jayshlynn Vega.
Carys Roy scored the first basket out of the timeout on a hook shot in the paint. The Peacocks made a defensive stand in the final minute after a stellar shooting performance by the Jaspers in the first quarter to take a 9-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Rippey scored the first points for the Peacocks in the second quarter on a pair of free throws. After a pull up jumper by Manhattan, Rippey drove to the lane and hit a spinning layup for the and-1, knocking down the free throw in the process. The Jaspers proceeded to then score nine straight points to lead 29-14 at the media break. The last points in the second quarter came from Rippey scoring four points by herself by knocking down a free throw and hitting a long range triple to follow it up. And with the buzzer sounding, the Peacocks sat behind Manhattan at a 18-31 deficit heading into the second half.
THIRD QUARTER: Rippey continued her hot scoring into the second half by knocking down a spinning layup inside to get the and-1 followed up by the converted free throw. Rippey stayed scoring with a triple from the corner that erupted the Peacocks bench.
Laila Grant then followed up the basket with a mid range jumper with the shot clock expiring. Another and-1 by Rippey and the converted free throw made the score 29-35 halfway through the quarter. The Peacocks kept dialing up the scoring by another triple from Rippey sent the game into the media timeout with the Peacocks rallying back in a 32-39 ballgame. Following a series of technical fouls on both sides, the score sat at 33-47 after a free throw by Zdenkova. And with buzzer sounding to end the third quarter, the Peacock's strong rally kept the game tight in a 33-49 score.
FOURTH QUARTER: Rippey scored the first basket for Saint Peter's in the fourth quarter with a mid range and 3-point jumper to open up the final period. After back to back baskets by the Jaspers, Rippey added another point to her total with a free throw. A nine point run by Manhattan made the score 39-62 in favor of the Jaspers. In response, Saint Peter's found themselves on a six point lead with free throws by Allana and Rippey to go along with a layup by
Sierra Patricio. And with the clock winding down in the final period, the Peacocks ended the contest on a four point run with free throws coming from Laws, Patricio, and
Jada Mills. All leading to the final buzzer and final score of 49-68.
