LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Saint Peter's baseball team fell, 2-5, in the series clinching game to Siena on Sunday afternoon at Connors Park. The Peacocks picked up three hits while the Saint finished with seven.
Saint Peter's (5-40, 1-23 MAAC) showed signs of life late in the game, while Siena (18-26, 10-14 MAAC) capitalized on a big third inning. The Saints plated all five of their runs in the frame and held off comeback attempts from the Peacocks.
Alex Manent led the way offensively for Saint Peter's, driving in both runs on a double in the sixth inning.
RJ Azarieh and
Chase Fogg recorded the other two hits for the Peacocks, while Azarieh and
Luke Schwartz each added a stolen base.
The Peacocks were unable to generate sustained offense. While the pitching staff settled in after a rough start, the early innings proved too much to overcome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Siena broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning, scoring all five runs. A two-RBI single through the left side got the Saints on the board before a two-run double to center field extended the lead. Siena added one more run on an RBI double later in the inning to take a commanding 5-0 advantage.
The Peacocks' pitching staff responded well after that third inning, holding Siena scoreless over the final six frames.
Logan Wenzel led the effort out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit across 4.1 shutout innings while keeping the Saints off balance.
Anthony Mancini followed with a scoreless inning of his own, as Saint Peter's combined to limit Siena to just one hit after the early surge and give the offense a chance to climb back into the game.
Saint Peter's remained quiet offensively until the sixth inning.
Joey Dwyer and
Steve Polizzi each reached base and eventually came around to score on Manent's two-RBI double to right field, cutting the deficit to 2-5.
The Peacocks looked to build momentum, but were unable to push across any additional runs over the final three innings. Siena's pitching staff limited Saint Peter's to just one hit the rest of the way to close it out.
In the end, the matchup leaned more toward a pitching duel than an offensive showcase. Outside of Siena's five-run third inning, both teams were kept in check at the plate, combining for just 10 total hits on the day. Saint Peter's pitching staff settled in effectively after the early damage, while Siena's arms limited the Peacocks' opportunities throughout, making timely pitching the deciding factor.
