FAIRFIELD, CONN.- The Saint Peter's women's soccer team (1-7-1) CONF. (0-1-1) had a hard-fought battle this evening, losing 0-2 against defending MAAC champions, the Sacred Heart Pioneers (7-2).
There wasn't a lot of action after the first 45 minutes of play. The game was scoreless until Rylee McGee of the Pioneers struck a shot in the 67th minute of play.
Julia Pinho Magno created quality chances for the Peacocks throughout the game and led the team with three shots.
WHAT HAPPENED:
FIRST HALF:
The Peacocks started the game with momentum.
Bergljot Kristinsdottir made her first save of the game at the five-minute mark.
Julia Pinho Magno fired a shot in the 11th minute of play, but Kyran Thievon was able to get the stop.
Alexa De Barros had an opportunity in the 38th minute, but her attempt was stopped by the Pioneers' keeper.
At halftime, the Pioneers had the upper hand in shots, leading 12-2. Kristinsdottir had seven saves.
SECOND HALF:
The Peacocks and Pioneers exchanged goal opportunities in the early minutes of the second half.
A Saint Peter's free kick led to a shot by
Sydney Ragland that couldn't break the mould for the Peacocks. Pinho Magno fired back two minutes later in the 59th minute with a shot attempt that went high of the Sacred Heart goal.
With attacking momentum, the Peacocks were battling to get on the scoreboard.
Mayla McLean took her chance and went for the goal in the 62nd minute, but her attempt was blocked.
Senior defender
Jacqui Weber was disciplined with a yellow card during a Sacred Heart counterattack.
The Pioneers broke the scoring drought in the 67th minute when Shea Kelleher found Rylee McGee. McGee fired the ball in the back of the Saint Peter's goal.
The Peacocks didn't test the Pioneer's backline much after the first goal. Sacred Heart secured its win in the 79th minute with a second goal from Shea Kelleher.
