RIVERSIDE, NY. - The Saint Peter's volleyball team fell in four sets to the Manhattan Jaspers (2-8) 3-1 on Saturday. The Peacocks (0-12) dropped to (0-2) in conference play.
Mackenzie Tucker led the Peacocks with 11 kills while
Madison Somberg recorded a career-high four service aces against the Jaspers. At the net,
Elena Bilhartz had a team-high six blocks. SPU freshman
Ryan Shelton recorded a career-high in points (8.5) and blocks (5.)
Lilly Konrad distributed a team-high 15 assists and SPU senior
Skylee Nelson had the most digs for the Peacocks with 10.
Match Notes
- The Peacocks started the match strong as they took the opening set 25-16. SPU trailed 5-1 before it went on a 6-0 run that featured two kills from Bilhartz and two service aces from Somberg. Somberg's second service ace gave the Peacocks a 6-5 lead. The Jaspers retook the lead at 7-6 before the Peacocks scored the next six consecutive points for a 12-7 advantage. The Peacocks held on to their lead and scored eight of the last ten points in the set.
- Manhattan tied the match, as it won the second set 25-21. Both teams exchanged runs. A service ace from Konrad had the Peacocks down 21-20 before the Jaspers won four of the last five points. Manhattan closed out the second set with two kills from Mikalah Curran and two service aces from Sarah Emmons.
- The third set was the closest set in the match. SPU trailed 20-18 before it won the next three points. A block by Morgan Thurlow and Tucker gave the Peacocks the lead at 21-20 before the Jasper won five of the last seven points and pulled out the set 25-23.
- In the fourth set the Jaspers jumped out to a 10-4 lead and maintained. The Peacoks put together a comeback effort as they trailed 21-14 and went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 21-18. SPU and Manhattan split the last four points in the set as Manhattan won 25-20.
It will be a quick turnaround for Saint Peter's as the Peacocks travel to Iona on Sunday Sep. 17 for a conference match at 1PM.
