NEWARK, Del. – The Saint Peter's volleyball team (4-6) dropped a doubleheader on Saturday at Bob Carpenter Center to wrap up the weekend of competition. The Peacocks fell to Pennsylvania (6-3) in three sets (22-25, 16-25, 18-25) before ultimately losing to Delaware (3-6) in four sets (19-25, 19-25, 30-28, 17-25).
The Peacocks had no time to think about their victory over Morgan State on Friday night, as they had a tough test ahead of them in both Penn and Delaware today. Despite the losses,
Karolina T. Rodriguez Mendez and
Lagean Colon put together solid performances for the Peacocks.
In the two games, Rodriguez Mendez combined for 13 kills and 11 blocks while averaging a .317 hitting percentage. Colon led the Peacocks on the receiving end against the Blue Hens, recording a team-high 16 digs, which is the third most she's ever had in a match. Colon was selected to the Delaware Invitational All-Tournament team for her performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
VS PENN: The Peacocks put together a highly competitive first set against the Quakers with five ties and two lead changes.
Sibana González Acevedo and
Addison Baglio led the charge, but it wasn't enough as Saint Peter's dropped set one, 22-25. In set two, SPU trailed Penn, 8-9, before a 7-0 scoring run put the Quakers out of reach. Penn took set two, 25-16. The Peacocks struggled to produce points in the third and final set. Large scoring runs by the Quakers led to another set win, 25-18.
VS DELAWARE: Saint Peter's started behind in set one against the Blue Hens, but scored seven unanswered points, ignited by back-to-back kills from
Lara Martinez. After the run, the Peacocks held a 10-9 lead over Delaware. The score stayed close until the Blue Hens started stacking kills later on to take the set, 25-19. Set two had a similar outcome to the first as Delaware won, 25-19, again. The third set was the craziest of them all as the Peacocks took it, 30-28.
Elena Bilhartz had several kills and blocks in the third set to push the Peacocks past the Blue Hens. Delaware finished things off in the fourth set with a 25-17 score.
