EDISON, NJ – After a standout performance at the ECAC Championships this past weekend, freshman
Lourdes Lawson was named the Jersey Mike's MAAC Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. Lawson earns the first MAAC weekly accolade for the women's team this season.
The West Suffield, Connecticut native impressed at her first ECAC Championships. On day one, Lawson posted a personal best of 12.92m in the weight throw, finishing 14th overall. On day two, the freshman broke the 13-meter barrier in the shot put, becoming just the second Peacock in program history to do so.
She opened the day in the shot put by narrowly missing the podium, placing fourth in a field of 17 athletes. The top four finishers were the only competitors to surpass 13 meters. Lawson threw more than two feet past her previous personal best set at the Metropolitan Championships and finished just one foot shy of the program record (13.09m), landing a mark of 13.05m.
Lawson was the only rookie to qualify for the finals, while Boston University's upperclassman trio swept the top three spots in the event. She currently ranks second in the MAAC in the shot put, just .41m off the conference lead. The top two spots in the league are the only marks to surpass 13 meters this season, and both have been achieved by freshmen.
Lawson and the rest of the Peacocks gear up for their final regular-season meet before the MAAC Championships, heading to New Haven, Connecticut, for Yale University's Giegengack Invitational at Coxe Cage on Saturday, February 14. Field events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the women's shot put, while track action starts at 1 p.m. with the women's mile.
